The reality of being in an abusive relationship

"It Ends with Us" by Colleen Hoover addresses domestic violence in a poignant way

Some people change when they realise what’s not right; others may never change. If you’re going through an abusive relationship, give your partner a chance by recommending a read It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover.

It’s a heart-wrenching yet empowering story that addresses the issue of domestic violence poignantly.

The novel follows the life of a young woman who falls in love with a successful neurosurgeon. Their relationship takes a dark turn when the husband’s anger issues start to surface.

Hoover does an excellent job of tackling a sensitive issue with grace and sensitivity, making it a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of domestic violence.

My favourite excerpts from the novel:

All humans make mistakes. What determines a person’s character aren’t the mistakes we make. It’s how we take those mistakes and turn them into lessons rather than excuses.

It’s not a person’s actions that hurt the most. It’s the love. If there was no love attached to the action, the pain would be a little easier to bear.

Sometimes parents have to work through their differences and bring a level of maturity into a situation in order to do what’s best for their child.

In the last fifteen minutes, he lost the love of his life. In the last fifteen minutes, he became a father to a beautiful little girl. That’s what fifteen minutes can do to a person. It can destroy them. It can save them.

“You can stop swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore.”

I’m looking forward to reading the second part of the novel.

The movie:

The movie adaptation of the novel is directed by Justin Baldoni. The cast includes Blake Lively as Lily, Brandon Sklenar as Atlas Corrigan, Jenny Slate as Allysa and Justin Baldoni as Ryle.
